Podcasts offer you thousands £’s worth of coaching FREE in a format you can enjoy over and over again.

If listening to Richard’s “chocolatey” voice isn’t enough of a reason to download them, remember that while the blog is pretty cool, the podcasts give you the man himself, right there in your living room. Kinda.

Jobswot Module 2: Knowing Yourself

This module contains a 22 minute podcast, plus a whopping 9 supporting PDFs – 6 Quicksheets, 2 exercises, and a reference pack.

How can you find your ideal job if you don’t know what you are looking for? ”Knowing Yourself” is critical before you dive into the job market.

Richard strongly recommends taking the time to understand who you are, what you want, and looks at turning those questions into potential talking-points at interview. This material will strengthen your ability to prepare a winning CV and talk knowledgeably about yourself throughout your job search.

Take a look at:

  • Your life values.
  • Your career expectations.
  • Your competencies & skills.
  • Your weaknesses.
  • Opportunities & Threats.
  • Creating a “Fit Profile” for your ideal job.

We know that you might be nervous that this stuff could turn out to be a waste of time, but we want you to relax about that.

People who have received Richard’s coaching first hand tell us that, along with the interview stuff later on, this chunk of learning sets them up for a quick and effective search.

Don’t make the mistake of rushing into your job search without developing a plan for yourself… use Richard’s approach and pull yourself ahead of the pack.

Jobswot Module 3: Your CV

“Your CV” comes third. This module contains a 23 minute podcast, plus 7 PDFs – 6 Quicksheets plus some example CVs.

The content is focused squarely on your CV/resume:

  • What is a CV?
  • How to prepare for writing your CV.
  • CV design tips.
  • Tailoring your CV.
  • Writing a covering letter/email.
  • Being “pitch ready” for the ‘phone calls.

In this module Richard tackles the creation of your CV and offers some practical ideas. We would recommend listening to this podcast only after you’ve worked through the questions in the previous one. That being said, we hope that this material will persuade you that the best person to write your CV really is… well… you!

The big mistake would be to assume that you already know all that there is to know about CVs. A bigger mistake, however, would be to imagine that we can give you the “silver bullet” CV that will never fail to get you an interview… because there are no silver bullets in a job-hunt.

We don’t claim that we have all the answers. We would instead point out that there’s good practice to consider, and a few big questions to ask yourself.

Of course, if you really do believe that you have a killer CV, and that your problem revolves around getting yourself picked from the crowd for interview, then feel free to skip this one and move on to Module 4.

Jobswot Module 4: Approaching The Market

“Approaching the Market” is the bit that most folk manage to mess up, making their lives much harder than it needs to be.

This module contains a 35 minute podcast, plus 6 PDF Quicksheets and a page of Networking Tips.

In this module Richard examines the methods available to you as you seek a new job. He proposes some more effective approaches than those most commonly used by job-hunters, as well as talking about issues such as your attitude and how to handle rejection. Find out why responding to adverts, using recruitment agencies, and hopping onto jobsites are not the best approaches.

Module 4 covers:

  • Getting yourself ready for rejection.
  • Why your attitude is key.
  • Your preferences versus the employer’s preferences.
  • Examining the many job-hunt methods.
  • How to get into networking.
  • Taking the direct approach.

Anyone who is keen to chop wasted time out of their jobsearch will find this module helpful.

Yes, you can skip ahead to the interview tips that come next if you want… but how are you going to make sure you get a bundle of interviews in the first place?

Jobswot Module 5: Why Should I Employ You?

This is the big question that your interviewer is asking.

The fifth step when Jobswotting is to tackle that question head on. This module contains a 22 minute Podcast, plus 6 more PDF Quicksheets.

Covering the basics of interviewing, Richard also introduces his “engage” approach.

Starting with the first telephone call in response to your CV, Richard walks you through the key stuff that will form the basis of winning at interview:

  • Handling “the ‘phone call”.
  • Interview preparation.
  • Interview basics.
  • Why names are vital.
  • Language tips.
  • How to engage your interviewer.

We’ve got to be honest – some of this stuff might seem obvious. That being said, it’s no lie to point out that even the best of us forget to notice the obvious stuff.

You are under pressure to perform, desperate to win that job, and you are in the hot seat… have you got all the bases covered?

More than that, how do you win over the heart of your interviewer, not just their head? We know that 80% of the decision will be, “Do I like you?”

Richard has some really helpful tips and ideas that will give you the edge at interview. The stuff here also lays down the groundwork for really cranking it up a notch when you use the stuff in Module 6 too.

Beyond “Knowing Yourself”, folk who’ve listened to Richard in the past tell us that this is the material that gives them a big edge.

What are you going to do to make sure you get offered that job?

Jobswot Module 6: The Interview Edge

If the interview is a foot-race in which you just can’t see the other runners, how do you finish in 1st Place?

The podcast is 33 minutes and comes with 6 supporting PDF Quicksheets.

The content gives you “The Interview Edge”:

  • The power of listening.
  • Your message.
  • Examining your body talk.
  • Persuasion tips.
  • Why you should talk story.
  • Focusing on EACH answer.

Building on the core interview material covered in Module 5, Richard takes you deeper into communication matters. These will give you a significant advantage over other interviewees.

This material is best used in conjunction with the earlier modules, so please be cautious of downloading it out of context. It’s hard to maximise this material unless you are well-prepared, know your CV inside-out, know who you are and what you want, and when you haven’t done the interview basics.

Used well, people tell us that this stuff really changes their approach to interviews.

Forget pat answers and start to really tackle each question you are faced with… and do it all in a way that will persuade the interviewer that you are not just the best skilled candidate but also the most attractive.

(No, not pretty-attractive… more “I like you” attractive, ok?)

Finesse this stuff, putting it into action at interview, and you’ll gain the edge you need.

Jobswot Module 7: Making A Decision

Right, so you’ve been offered the job. Now what?

You might be tempted to think that it’s all over for Jobswotters, but there is one final step – making a decision and negotiating the deal!

“Making a Decision” is the seventh module, containing a 19 minute podcast plus 6 supporting PDF Quicksheets.

The content is focused on:

  • Handling offers.
  • Negotiation tips.
  • Making a good decision for you.
  • The value of celebration.
  • Tackling the first 90 days.
  • Reviewing your career choices… ready for next time.

Once you have been successful at interview, how do you know that you are making the best decision?

Richard’s advice helps you to set yourself up for a cracking start in your new job. He’ll remind you to celebrate your success too – as if that will be a problem, eh? Connect back to the work you did in Module 2, and help yourself to close the offer you want the most.
